We choose strands with good overall flash, but a mix is the sign of natural, untreated stone rather than a flaw.
The base is a smoky grey, sometimes with hints of green or brown, and the flash that plays across it is usually blue, gold or green. A vivid, uniform blue across the whole bead with no movement is often dye, not the real stone.
The labradorescence is part of the stone's internal structure, so it does not wash out or fade. Over time a polished surface can pick up fine scratches from daily wear, which may slightly dull the shine — a gentle wipe and avoiding hard knocks keeps it bright.
