In a genuine bead the number of internal seed compartments matches the face count — visible if the bead is cut or X-rayed. In tradition the eleven faces are associated with Lord Hanuman and the eleven Rudras (forms of Shiva) rather than with one planet. So unlike, say, the 1 Mukhi linked to the Sun, it is kept for its connection to courage and protection rather than to a planetary influence.
The mukhis are the natural vertical lines on the seed's surface. An 11 Mukhi is a bead that grew with eleven of these lines, which is less common than lower counts. We count the faces as they naturally occur and never carve or sand a bead to reach a number.
Rudraksha is a natural seed, so keep it reasonably dry and wipe it clean now and then. A very light occasional oiling can help keep the surface from drying out. Harsh chemicals, strong perfume and long soaking are best avoided as they can dull or damage the natural grain.
