In tradition, the rudraksha mala is a tool for japa — one bead drawn between the fingers for each repetition of a mantra, the count keeping the body busy so the mind can settle. It asks for nothing but your *return to it, day after day.*
For anyone drawn to it — no ritual or belief is required. Wear it as tradition and meaning, or simply as a piece you love.
- ✕Often sold as polished, uniform beads that look machine-perfect and identical down the strand
- ✕Counts that quietly fall short of 108, or skip the summit (meru) bead

- ◆108 natural rudraksha beads, each with its own grain, face-lines and small variations
- ◆A full traditional count of 108, with a distinct meru bead to mark the start and end of a round
- ◆Sold as a japa tool with its traditional associations described, never promised
Real rudraksha is a seed, so a genuine mala shows the marks of nature rather than the sameness of a factory. A few honest things to check:

Natural variation bead to bead
On a real strand the beads are not perfectly identical. Look for slight differences in size, colour depth and surface grain — uniformity that looks machine-made is a warning sign.

Worn against the skin — on the wrist, or as a mala. There is no ritual you must perform; wear it as a daily companion, or as part of your own practice.
Keep it away from prolonged moisture and harsh chemicals. An occasional drop of oil keeps the bead dark and supple; store it in its pouch when not worn.
The essentials.
108 is the traditional count for a full round of japa — one bead drawn for each repetition of the mantra. The larger bead at the top is the meru, or summit bead; you do not cross it. When you reach it, you turn the mala and begin the next round in the other direction.
Yes. The mala is finished as a wearable strand and can also be held for counted repetition during practice, so it suits both uses.
Rudraksha is a natural seed and prefers to stay dry. Keep it away from prolonged water and harsh soaps, wipe it occasionally with a dry or barely damp cloth, and use only a very light occasional oiling if the surface dries. Stored well, a mala can remain usable for years.
